Whether you’ve overindulged, eaten something that doesn’t agree with you or just want a cleanse, this liver loving, stomach debloating juice recipe is for you.
Your liver is responsible for filtering toxins that enter your body. When your liver becomes too toxic you may:
- increase your risk of developing a fatty, scarred or fibrous liver and gall stones
- experience bloating and gas
- have mood swings
- feel more fatigued
- struggle to lose weight
- notice yellowing eyes/skin
- lack mental clarity
Show your liver some love by including cleansing foods and juices in your diet. You guessed it, one of the best ingredients for liver detoxification is beetroot.
Beetroots are packed full of vitamins and minerals and more importantly for your liver, betaine, betalains and pectin. Betaine is a ‘methyl donor’ (substance that transfers a methyl group to another substance, essential for biochemical processes) meaning it aids the process of liver detoxification, liver functioning and normal cell activity. Betalains are phytonutrients (pigments that give beetroot its hue) that aid the body’s natural detoxification process as well as possessing disease fighting antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Pectin (polyscaccaride fibre) helps guide toxins out of your body after the liver has filtered them.
But it’s not just the beets doing all the detox work in this juice. Basil contains terpenoids (aroma providing oils found in plants) to improve digestion and assist detoxification. Like beets, apples contain the soluble fibre pectin which aids the movement of waste products out of the body. You probably know by now that leafy greens harbour an endless list of benefits, so it’s no surprise that they also help detox the liver.
I have a very food sensitive body that bloats at the drop of hat. For me the best debloating, gut healing and detoxing foods are probiotic rich foods, soups and juices with ingredients like turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, apple cider vinegar, lemon and beetroot. When I need a bit of cleanse I reach for the blender and some beets.
1 small-medium sized beet (pre cooked and peeled)
1 handful spinach
¼ cup fresh basil leaves
1 small apple (decored and roughly chopped)
Enough water to fill your glass ¾ of the way up
Few ice cubes (optional)
Grab your ingredients and a blender. Shove all the ingredients (except the ice) in, give it a good whizz until everything is well blended and smooth.
Pour into a glass, add a straw and some ice.
Now take a beet son, you’re done.
