I don’t know about you but due to a little too much festive food and few too many ports/red wines/cavas my digestion has become rather sluggish.
The food we eat, the nutrients our body receives from that food, and how effectively it breaks down and absorbs the nutrients determines our overall health. This is why poor digestion, which many people unknowingly suffer from, can cause widespread symptoms from bloating and discomfort to fatigue, irritability and acne.
5 Natural ways to improve your digestion
1. Eat whole foods
Whole foods are essentially foods that nature naturally provides. They have minimal ingredients and are free of preservatives/refined or modified ingredients. Fill your plate with a rainbow of fresh fruit and vegetables, eat lean fresh meats and fibre rich whole grains. When it comes to snacks switch the Christmas biscuits for nuts, seeds, fruit or vegetables.
2. Up your fibre
Although our bodies can’t digest fibre, it is essential to our diet. Fibre feeds the good bacteria in the gut, helps the body absorb nutrients from food and pass the food along the colon to the bowels. Bean, legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, seeds like flax and chia and powders like psyllium husk are all great sources of fibre.
3. Be pro probiotics
Everybody has good and bad bacteria in their gut but for optimum digestion you want the good to outweigh the bad. Add natural yogurt (for dairy free I like Alpro plain unsweetened), miso, sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha to your diet. Also try a supplement, look for one that provides multiple strains of bacteria and contains at least 5 billion live bacteria.
4. Keep hydrated
Most people don’t drink enough and when they do, they grab caffeinated or carbonated drinks. What your gut really wants is water, lemon water, apple cider vinegar water or herbal teas with ingredients like dandelion, milk thistle and peppermint.
5. Practice yoga
Certain yoga moves can work wonders for getting things moving in your body (if ya know what I mean) and reducing abdominal discomfort.
Yoga Sequence for digestion
I actually created this flow as part of my parent’s advent calendar so it is perfectly suited for beginners and all ages.
Either perform a few asanas (poses) or flow through the sequence.
My New Year’s Resolutions
Every year I write a list of things I want to achieve but every year I fail to tick off 90% of said list. With that in mind, this year I have decided to prioritise 3 things:
1.Sort out my health
For too long my low mood has been controlling me and holding me back, it’s about time I showed it who’s boss. In addition, my hormones are a mess and I have amenorrhea (it’s been 10 months since I had a period).
2.Become more independent
Earn some money, learn to drive and go explore the world! Who knows I may trick some poor man into falling in love with me mwahahaa.
3.Do things that make me happy
Stop letting fear/other people’s opinions prevent me from doing the things that will bring me joy. I’m going to finally start a Youtube channel, wear my sparkly trousers with confidence and dance until my heart is content.
Best wishes and love to you for 2018 x
